Behavioral Change and WELL-BEING
Well-being refers to a state of not only physical health but also mental and social fulfillment. Our lab focuses on developing systems that enhance daily life by utilizing sensor data from users and their surrounding environments, gathered through smartphones, wearable devices, and other tools. We also study methods to promote behavioral change that supports well-being.
Mobile and Wearable Sensing
Smartphones and smartwatches are equipped with various sensors such as GPS, barometers, and accelerometers. Recently, increasing attention has been paid to sensors embedded in wireless earphones, such as microphones and accelerometers. We are researching methods to detect users’ behaviors and mental states by leveraging the sensors in these daily carry-on and wearable devices.
Sensing Infrastructure and Machine Learning
In addition to mobile and wearable devices carried by people, automobiles will be equipped with a variety of sensors, such as cameras and radars. To efficiently store and transmit the vast amounts of data generated by these sensors, data compression is essential. We are studying data reconstruction using compressed sensing and high-efficiency data transmission techniques leveraging generative AI. Furthermore, we are conducting research on federated learning, a machine learning approach that enables model training across distributed sensor networks while preserving user privacy.
